Linux-howto.com was started by me (Rob Kennedy) back in March of 1997. I had started an internet cafe, and needed an O/S for the server. I of course put Linux on it, and since I had a dedicated line (only 128k isdn), I figured i'd put up a Linux site.

Time passed, and the site got bigger, and more popular. It started out as pretty much a mirror for the LDP, but then I started adding things like RFCs, Man Pages, Plain text HOWTOS, translations, and unmaintained HOWTOS.

Then the cafe wasn't doing so hot, so I had to close it, and had to also find a home for linux-howto.com. I had met some guys on IRC (#linux on irc.starlink-irc.org) that ran a server in Virginia (Mhost.com). They offered to host the site for me at a fair price. I decided to go ahead and move it to their server, and we added the Bookstore, and other sections.

I stayed pretty much the same for a while after that... i'd add updates on news, kernel, etc, but it wasn't growing anymore, and pretty much hit a dead end. Recently however, I had heard that TUCOWS was getting into Linux software. I called them to see if they wanted to advertise on Linux-howto.com, and they had asked me if I wanted to get more involved.. I wanted to, but my Job would hold me back from doing much work on the side. About a week later, they made an offer to purchase Linux-Howto.com from me, and hire me full time to work on it, and Linuxberg from home. I of course jumped at the offer, and now Linux-Howto.com has a new home.

Here, at Linuxberg, I'll have time to do updates all day, and make the site bigger, and more useful for you folks. :) The first change was the format. The old format required you to go back to the index page to go to other sections. This new format is much easier on the eyes, and also provides you to go to any section from any page. Also, we went from a T1 to 3 T3s. Not like we needed anything bigger than a T1, but it's nice, and may come in handy one day.

Main thing though now is that all my time is spent on making the site better, and hopefully, one of the best on the net as far as Linux information goes. If you would like to suggest a section, or a change, please email me (rob@linuxberg.com) and let me know. My goal is to have everything you could possibly want on here. That includes mirrors to your other favorite sites.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, as this little story is the story behind Linux-Howto.com, and is pretty interesting to me. Again, let me know if you have any ideas for the site.

-Rob
